AMIT Israel Spotlight Session #2: AMIT’s Community of Co-Ed and Secular Schools – Bridging Divides, Building Community

Students in 9th grade from AMIT Kfar Ganim in Petach Tikva raised money and packed more than 150 food packages for poor people before Pesach.

AMIT Florin Taman Junior and Senior Hight School for Boys won the prestigious SpaceLab competition, run by the Ramon Foundation. Their project experiment will be tested in outer space! The school is located in the Northern most part of Israel, and many of the students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Given the location of the school and some of the challenges the students and their families face, this achievement is all the more impressive. Over 100 teams participated in the competition and 17 reached the finals, of whom four were chosen as winners of the competition including the AMIT Tzfat team.

AMIT President Audrey Axelrod Trachtman recently appeared on an i24 News broadcast and spoke about the innovative 21st-century educational approach AMIT has implemented throughout our 104 schools in Israel. In partnership with the American Zionist Movement, the i24 News broadcast featured several Zionist organizations.

March and April 2020 saw the early, chaotic days of Coronavirus in Israel. The country and especially medical staff experienced a dangerous shortage of protective equipment and masks. In the south, the AMIT B’Levav Shalem Robotics Team in Yeruham decided to partner with the Yeruham Science Center to help solve the problem—by producing masks themselves.

The Minister of Education’s prize for volunteerism and social activism in Israel’s southern region was given to Ravid H., a 12th grade student at AMIT Kiryat Malachi. Ravid is chairman of the school’s student council and the city-wide student council. She also serves as the CEO of a company, through which she developed the All Mall application, an app to improve the user experience at malls, through a joint initiative with UniStream.

Ulpanat AMIT Schreiber in Tzfat had 7th and 8th-grade students in the art chug (extra-curricular class) create a unique virtual photography display of their artwork.

AMIT Ashdod Arts and Science Ulpanit High School for Girls created a wonderful opportunity for 27 10th graders majoring in Theater Arts, through a partnership with the local, well-regarded and highly professional Ashdod Performing Arts Center.

As we bid farewell to 2020 and enter 2021, we want to take a moment to express our tremendous gratitude for showing up, despite all the challenges and hardships. YOUR support helped make this past year a successful one for more than 41,000 children, 70% of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds. It wasn’t an easy year, but with your help, AMIT children continued to receive the most innovative Jewish values-based education whether they were learning in class, or remotely from their homes.

AMIT students developed an app that provides a solution to the problem of disabled parking. The solution will allow, through a barcode identification, to check whether a vehicle in disabled parking is authorized to park in it and if the vehicle is not authorized, the information will be reported directly to the authorities.

Morag A., a 12-year-old student, has created an application with the help of which the residents of Yeruham can complain about harms and see if the complaints are handled.

Jonathan Davidovich, the son of political adviser, Shuli Davidovich, and AMIT Nachshon Yeshiva student went out last week for the first time on a trip with the new wheelchair installed by Paratrek – a project specializing in providing solutions to all types of physical disabilities.

The AMIT Network reaches every one of its students even in the days of corona, with the help of an advanced computer system, artificial intelligence and algorithms that allow each principal to provide an immediate answer to the needs of his or her students.

Despite Israel’s third coronavirus lockdown, the sounds of the shofar still echoed throughout the land. That’s thanks to an enterprising and dedicated group of young women organized by Hilma, a non-profit tech organization which focuses on social good and which is supported by AMIT.

Continuing the AMIT tradition of caring for those in the community, the 12th grade students at Yeshivat AMIT B’Levav Shalem in Yerucham are helping out during these dire times. This past Rosh Hashana marked the second coronavirus lockdown in Israel. Nearly all 60 12th graders answered the call to provide aid and comfort by volunteering; in this case, they packaged about 500 food baskets for the Yerucham elderly in need.

AMIT recently launched a podcast to discuss many topics within the educational landscape. In this first podcast the discussion focusses on the ever-changing world of education.

Women’s health is neglected. A gap in medical care and research exists, with gender stereotypes affecting how women are received, diagnosed and treated by doctors.

The Peres Center for Peace & Innovation recently hosted a virtual ceremony to commemorate the fourth anniversary since the passing of the ninth President of the State of Israel, Shimon Peres, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.

Batsheva Zigdon, z”l, beloved AMIT teacher, wife, mother and friend, tragically passed away on October 9, 2020, the eve of Simchat Torah. A victim of COVID-19, she was 55 years old.

Now that the lockdown is over and Israelis can move about outside of their homes, but schools are not yet open for in-person learning, the administration of AMIT Wasserman Torah, Arts and Sciences Junior and Senior High School for Girls in Maaleh Adumim decided to get creative in their outreach to their home-bound students. They rented an ice cream cart and walked around the city’s neighborhoods, handing out ice cream treats to students, teachers and teachers’ children. They also distributed Parashat HaShavua worksheets for students to discuss around their families’ Shabbat tables, and kits for a mother-daughter activity centered on the upcoming yartzheit of Rachel Emanu (Rachel the Matriarch).

It has now been ten days since our students and educational teams returned to Sderot and AMIT schools.


After five long months the excitement is real: we have begun welcoming our students back home in Sderot!

We are happily welcoming back many reservists and their spouses throughout the Reshet, including principals, educators, and headquarters professionals.
Despite these challenging times, we continue to work hard to remain positive and contribute to the war efforts in meaningful ways.
