Ordinarily, kids don’t look that thrilled when school restarts in the fall. But this year, as Aviv, Amit, Esther, and Yoel describe, it felt great to get back!

How do we make the education system relevant to the 21st century, especially during the days of corona? At the AMIT Educational Network, which developed a new and innovative pedagogical language, education has focused on independent learning in digital environments for the past several years.

Among all the difficulties that the coronavirus has brought, there is one area where it forces us to make a change that maybe for the better. The virus is forcing the education system—and others—to connect to the 21st century and adapt to the contemporary world. All at once, teachers and students were separated from the desks and chairs, the blackboards and chalk, and were required to produce alternatives.

Like all things that were abruptly interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, the year in Israel for Midreshet AMIT students ended in March. The students left Israel and went back home. But their learning didn’t stop. The students continued studying with their rabbis and teachers via Zoom from thousands of miles away. The distance didn’t shake the warm connection they developed for one another or the profound impact Midreshet AMIT had on their lives.

Dori B., a 12th grader at AMIT Mr. & Mrs. Lester Sutker Arts and Sciences Jr. and Sr. High School for Boys in Modiin, won the citywide top volunteer award that was given to him at a recent ceremony honoring teenage volunteers in the city.

Officials broke ground recently on the new Gogya school that will be built for AMIT Gutwirth in Sderot, heralding the movement forward and endorsement of educational innovation in Israel following the health crisis.

Four students from AMIT Kamah in Yerucham won first place in the Israel Sustainable Development Goals Program (ISDG) competition, a unique program that gives students the opportunity to create solutions for Third World countries.

Talia Kadosh, an 11th grader at Ulpanat AMIT Or Akiva, and Akivah Amitai, a 12th grader at Yeshivat AMIT Nachshon in Mateh Yehuda, are the winners of Israel’s prestigious essay contest (along with Chaim Chaimovich, a 9th grader at the Kfar Yarok Agricultural school).

Israel was in the midst of a coronavirus shutdown, but AMIT Kfar Blatt Youth Village was always open, offering a protective home for students who needed a safe place for the Pesach vacation during the difficult days of the pandemic.

Another painful consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic has been that those who suffered these losses have not been able to pay tribute to their loved ones because of restrictions of social distancing. A team of young women at Carmel 6000, a prestigious national service project under the auspices of AMIT, created a way for mourners to commemorate these Jewish victims of COVID-19 worldwide.

In this blog, Etti Tzabari, principal of AMIT Kennedy Acco, shares the challenge and triumphs of dealing with the coronavirus at her school and how the school community pivoted to the new medium, new situation, and embraced the health crisis as an opportunity.

Going back to school never has been so sweet! As AMIT schools opened in a very limited way this week, returning students were met with warmth, candy, and signage welcoming them back into the classrooms – the first time in two months since the Education Ministry closed schools because of the pandemic.

Daniel M., 15, a student at AMIT Ashdod Yeshiva, has been heading a nationwide effort to bring seniors food and medicines, a tremendous service for the country’s most vulnerable citizens, and an example of a student living AMIT values.
