AMIT Israel Spotlight Session #2: AMIT’s Community of Co-Ed and Secular Schools – Bridging Divides, Building Community

Students from AMIT Bienenfeld Hevruta Yeshiva’s scouting track achieved an incredible feat this week when they completed a 50-day trek along the Israel National Trail.

The girls at AMIT Wasserman Torah, Arts and Sciences take part in an annual race, and this year they dedicated it to the memory of Ella Or, z”l, who was killed in the flash flood that struck southern Israel last month.

Last week, we had the privilege of welcoming representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Israel at two AMIT schools in Petach Tikvah: Yeshivat AMIT Eliraz High School and AMIT Menorat HaMaor Haredi Track.

More than 1,000 students in Sderot and other Israeli towns bordering the Gaza Strip had to take the English bagrut exam this week, just as tensions were flaring up in the area.
Students from AMIT Kennedy Junior and Senior High School won second place in the international Rube Goldberg Machine Contest and received a special message from Education Minister Naftali Bennett congratulating them on their achievement.

Continuing an annual tradition, AMIT’s young leadership council completed a yearlong educational process with “Yom AMIT” (AMIT Day), a day when hundreds of AMIT students and staff come together and turn their attention to a specific theme. This year’s theme was the connection between Jewish communities in Israel and the Diaspora.

Students from the AMIT Kennedy Junior and Senior High School in Acco won first place at the international science and education program called GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment).

Yitzhak Fatana, a 14-year-old AMIT student, won first place at an international wrestling championship held recently in Russia.

Students from the Lewis and Wolkoff Preparatory Army Program at the Gloria and Henry I. Zeisel and Family Junior College at Kfar Blatt recently returned from a seminar in Germany where they studied at some of the most advanced automotive colleges and toured the factories of some of the most impressive manufacturers.

Ulpanat AMIT Givat Shmuel was ranked the No. 1 school in that city, according to a recent list published by Madlan, an urban insight company that compiles data including standardized test scores and student reviews of schools across Israel.

The robotics team at AMIT Yud Ashdod just achieved another impressive success, winning the regional Arduino competition and advancing to the national stage. They will be joined in the nationals by eighth-grade students from AMIT Daisy Berman Yeshiva in Beersheva.

Lights! Camera! And most importantly, action! Students from AMIT Atidim Junior and Senior High School took first place at a national competition for creative youth with their film “Gog and Magog.”

In June 2015, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin made a remarkable speech, in which he warned that Israeli society is divided into four “tribes”—ultra-Orthodox, national religious, secular, and Arab—that are increasingly growing apart.

At AMIT Wasserman Torah, Arts and Sciences Junior High School for Girls, things are about to change. The school is taking a leap into the future propelling the school into the 21st century.

Yael Fischer may be only 17, but she is already the founder of a project whose aim is to improve the quality of life for lonely senior citizens across Israel and to bridge generational gaps.

AMIT Hammer Junior and Senior High School for Boys won the Education Ministry’s national prize for educational excellence, beating out dozens of other schools across Israel being considered for the prestigious award.

Four teachers and four students from AMIT schools across the country were recently awarded certificates of excellence at an event marking 70 years of education in Israel.

Dr. Bracha Halaf, chief scientist at Israel’s Ministry of National Infrastructure, Energy and Water Resources, met with some 9th-graders from the school in Kedumim. She described her personal journey through the ranks of the scientific world, from high school through her current research.

Miriam Peretz, whose two sons Uriel and Eliraz died in combat 12 years apart while serving in the Israeli army, recently won the Israel Prize for lifetime achievement for “strengthening the Jewish-Israeli spirit.”

The senior management of the AMIT network and officials from the Education Ministry visited AMIT Fred Kahane Technological High School in Ashkelon to learn about the innovative changes taking place at the vocational school.

Asif Solomon, an 8th-grader at AMIT Ginsburg Bar Ilan Gush Dan Junior and Senior High School for Boys, won first place at the national chess championship for youth under the age of 14.

As part of their celebration of Israel’s 70th Independence Day, students at Yeshivat AMIT Amichai designed a special escape room in the form of the Prime Minister’s Office.

On behalf of AMIT, our Board, and all our supporters, we congratulate AMIT past president Debbie Isaac on her appointment as President of the American Zionist Movement (AZM). Debbie is the first woman to lead this organization in over 40 years.

A few years ago, Hatzor Haglilit’s regional council in the north announced a system-wide revolution which included educational plans, staffing changes, upgrades to infrastructure, increasing budgets, and a general emphasis in all of the municipality’s resources to provide whatever is needed so that students in Hatzor Haglilit would be on par with those in schools in the center of the country.

Tomer Gertel, a student from Amit Be’er Tuvia, has been chosen as Israel’s representative at the UN International Climate Conference. Tomer, a sophomore, will participate in the conference in three months’ time, in Milan, Italy. Approximately 9,000 candidates from all over the world applied to take part, and only 400 youth were chosen to attend.

In a show of solidarity and support, AMIT President Audrey Trachtman came to Israel at the first possible moment. She came to see, to meet, and to speak to AMIT students and staff around the country. In a packed schedule of less than a week, Trachtman also made sure to visit with people and cities that were most affected by the recent rockets from Gaza.

The Tangram program is a program for excellence in math for middle school students run by the Davidson Institute of Science Education of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rechovot. Once a year they have a one-day competition with the participation of all the schools across Israel that are in the Tangram program. This year’s 7th-grade competition was held via zoom. After two hours of competition, the team from Yeshivat AMIT Eliraz in Petach Tikva, led by their teacher Tzvika Leibovitch, won first place!
