AMIT Israel Spotlight Session #2: AMIT’s Community of Co-Ed and Secular Schools – Bridging Divides, Building Community

The IDF’s Manpower Directorate published its annual ranking of cities and schools that “contribute more” to military service—meaning that their recruits join combat units and serve as officers. Yeshivat AMIT Nachshon ranked No. 4 out of all the boys’ schools in Israel (religious and secular), with a 100% enlistment rate.

About 50 students voluntarily signed up for the program and come to school every day. They enjoy breakfast together and then take part in different activities, all of which are aimed at improving their English.

The team from AMIT HaOfek in Or Akiva designed a control system to monitor the various stages of ice cream production. They beat 170 other teams from across Israel to take the No. 2 spot.

The robotics team from AMIT Dvir Junior and Senior High School for Boys recently toured the Rehovot branch of Applied Materials, whose “innovations make possible the technology shaping the future,” according to the company.

When a group of girls from the AMIT Ramle Technological High School, one of the network’s vocational schools, couldn’t find summer jobs, they created an “escape room” at the school that they called “Escape from the Stigmas.” To escape, participants went on a scavenger hunt for letters that form the words respect, love, acceptance, and others. The room was such a hit that the girls had to extend its hours of operation.

Two 11th-grade AMIT students at the Elaine Silver Technological High School in Beersheva made history by becoming the first two female students—including the first Ethiopian girl ever—to enroll in the vocational school’s automotive electronics track. “Everyone says that this is men’s work, but we wanted to show that it’s not only for men,” said Malka Rata, one of the girls.

Bracha Amrousi, a math teacher at the AMIT Gwen Straus Junior and Senior Science High School for Boys, was named one of six “teachers of the nation” at a festive ceremony this week that was attended by President Reuven Rivlin and other dignitaries.

Three students from AMIT Yehuda Junior and Senior High School are taking part in a special summer program at Tel Aviv University geared specifically toward children from Israel’s periphery.

The Modi’in boys’ team, known as the Kipa Bots, competed against teams from more than 100 countries around the world. They won the mechanical planning category of the competition, one of the more significant parts of the contest.

The AMIT Yud Ashdod robotics team won the national innovation award at the FLL robotics competition for youth. They were chosen to represent Israel at the FIRST international robotics competition, where they faced off against 80 other teams.

Students from the Mr. and Mrs. Lester Sutker AMIT Modi’in School for Boys won third place in an international young entrepreneurship competition with their eco-friendly tablecloth that has games printed on it and that doubles as a trash bag.

For the second consecutive year, students from AMIT Ginsburg Bar Ilan Gush Dan Jr. and Sr. High School for Boys won first place in the junior high division of the national cyber championship, run by the Education Ministry.

AMIT Wasserman Torah, Arts and Sciences in Ma’ale Adumim launched new technology-related programs in the 2017 school year, including one in collaboration with IT and networking giant Cisco and Taasiyeda, an Israeli nonprofit that develops leadership and tech skills in kids.

It is with many mixed emotions that I send out this last “Midreshet AMIT News” email to the students and parents of the class of AMIT 5778. We experienced many emotional goodbyes these past few days and had multiple opportunities to reflect on the incredible accomplishments and growth of our students.

This year, 93% of the graduates of the AMIT Menorat HaMaor Petah Tikva ultra-Orthodox high school will be graduating with matriculation certificates. This is a meteoric increase compared to the previous year in which 62.5% of the students earned a matriculation certificate. When compared with the national average of 69.7% the achievement is equally notable.

Of all the units in the IDF, the Air Force is considered the elite of the elite. Very few soldiers make it through the grueling training course. (For security reasons, those soldiers are not allowed to be named nor their pictures published.) Last week, a graduate of AMIT Ginsburg Bar Ilan Gush Dan Junior and Senior High School for Boys, Ramat Gan, stood on the parade ground at the Hatzerim Air Force base at the end of the helicopter course and received his wings.

The Robotics Program FLL (FIRST LEGO League), established in collaboration with LEGO, exposes children from kindergarten up to ninth grade, to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through practical, fun, and exciting learning opportunities. Participants gain experience in real-world problem solving through a global robotics program that helps today’s students and teachers build a better future together.

During a visit to Yeshivat AMIT Kfar Ganim High School in Petach Tikva by the Ministry of Education’s management, Ministry Director-General Amit Edri said that it was a place full of educational inspiration and that the visit gave the entire administration food for thought. “This is a place of inspiration and idealism; a place that combines many values, knowledge, and skills. I wish there were more educational institutions like this.”

Students at Sutker AMIT Renanim Science and Technology High School for Girls in Ra’anana held a hair donation event this week for cancer patients. It took a long time for the students to grow their hair long enough for this important cause.

“Leadership Scores” is a social project designed to instill values and develop leadership abilities among youth through basketball tournaments and classroom leadership educational activities.
On the final day of the program run by the “Sports Educational Initiative” organization, which took place this week, students from AMIT Wasserman Jr. and Sr. High School in Beer Sheva won first place in the Southern District.
