AMIT Israel Spotlight Session #2: AMIT’s Community of Co-Ed and Secular Schools – Bridging Divides, Building Community

Outstanding students from two AMIT schools for girls recently took part in the Tech Women 2018 conference at the Technion, one of the world’s top science and technology research universities.

Students from the AMIT Gwen Straus school for boys recently met with Avi Blasberger, director general of the Israel Space Agency, to get his feedback on their research project for a national robotics competition.

AMIT students from several schools were chosen to take part in a special program with Google Israel called “Mind the Gap,” which aims to encourage young women to develop an interest in computer science and increase the number of women in the tech industry.

Ninth-grade students at AMIT Gwen Straus who are taking part in a unique entrepreneurship program went on a tour of the Powermat Technologies offices this week, where they met with CEO Elad Dubzinski and learned about wireless charging solutions.

A team of 16- and 17-year-olds at an AMIT Yeshiva High School in the outskirts of Jerusalem has set up a startup company to develop a wrist band that aims to help keep beach-goers safe from drowning.

The start of the new school year can be a time of great anticipation and also trepidation for both parents and students. I do not have children myself, but I understand that the Israeli educational system can be a little uneven. AMIT, an educational net work consisting of 110 schools and 45,000 students across the country — religious and secular — claims that it will provide an educational revolution that will facilitate change in the classroom.

How does a schoolteacher convey a values-based education? Subjects such as math are governed by indisputable numbers, equations, and figures, whereas a lesson in values requires a different approach. We have been focusing on students and how they implement AMIT’s idea of chessed and community during their summer vacations, by volunteering in many different capacities. But where are they learning their values? One answer is by watching their teachers act as role models, in and out of the classroom.

According to the Ministry of Education, the percentage of Bagrut eligibility at AMIT Bet Ashkelon Jr. and Sr. High School continues to climb and has now reached 85%! This is a huge increase from three years ago when the rate was only 50%. In addition, 35 students received certificates of social involvement excellence.
