AMIT Israel Spotlight Session #2: AMIT’s Community of Co-Ed and Secular Schools – Bridging Divides, Building Community

Ahead of the Sukkot holiday, AMIT students throughout the network of schools are taking part in an initiative to keep alive the memory of Lt. Hadar Goldin, z”l, a graduate of the AMIT Gwen Straus Jr. & Sr. Science High School for Boys, who was killed in the 2014 Gaza war and whose remains have not been returned to Israel.

Ahead of the Sukkot holiday, students from the AMIT network embarked on a mission across Israel to lend a hand to those unable to build a sukkah by themselves.

Several AMIT schools prepared for the Jewish New Year by undertaking chesed projects within their communities, underscoring the emphasis that the network places on volunteer work and doing good for those who are less fortunate.

AMIT Fred Kahane is a technological high school that offers a second chance to students who have not succeeded in academic schools.

Rather than force students into existing definitions, the school’s philosophy and educational approach is to nurture them while facilitating the development of their many intelligences.

Midreshet AMIT is a unique gap-year program in Israel that gives young women the opportunity to develop intellectually while exploring their Jewish identity through serious learning, meaningful volunteer work, and a true Israel experience.

AMIT Tzfat High School for Girls provides a quality education for 400 girls in grades 7–12. In addition to Jewish and general studies, the subjects offered are communication and film, law, physics, biology and medicine.

The school’s motto—Learn, Experience, Believe—is brought to life on a daily basis through the academic programs, arts classes and Judaic study opportunities offered to the students.

Students at Elaine Silver have struck out at other more conventional high schools, where they were deemed to be disruptive or sub-par academically. AMIT Elaine Silver gives these kids a last chance to turn their lives around, choosing academic success over the allure of the street and its many dangers.

AMIT Yehuda is the only religious high school in Afula, with a student body of 300 boys from the city and its periphery. It educates teens from strictly observant homes and traditional homes, as well as those from unobservant homes who choose to have a religious high school experience.

There is no debate that the quality of teachers is the most important factor in the success of the educational system, and it is, therefore, crucial that we lead a change that will attract the best to the field of education. In a recent study, Israel’s National Bureau of Statistics found the average score of teachers on the psychometric exam to be below the national average (545).

In the beginning of July, I had the opportunity to visit AMIT’s center for educational innovation, GOGYA, located in Ra’anana, Israel. The name “GOGYA” comes from the word “pedagogy,” and the GOGYA center is where principals and teachers from the AMIT schools gather to reimagine education for the 21st century.

Studying for the bagrut exams is a rite of passage for most Israeli teens, as they know it will pave the way for their path to higher education. Many study on their own or with friends, some hire private tutors while every year about 6,000 Israeli teens get assistance through a virtual program called Nachshon.

When a group of girls from the AMIT Ramle Technological High School couldn’t find summer jobs, they and their teacher came up with a plan that would keep them occupied, help them earn some money and helps others have fun—all while emphasizing acceptance and diversity.

Several aspiring legal eagles from the AMIT Gwen Straus Jr. and Sr. Science High School for Boys in Ra’anana submitted bills to the Knesset to rectify what they consider pressing issues in Israel as part of their studies for the bagrut exam in law.

Numbers play a significant role in Judaism, and for the 110 women who attended the AMIT’s annual Yom Iyun (Day of Learning) at the Sephardic Temple in Cedarhurst on July 26.

A group of students from the AMIT Yehuda Jr. and Sr. High School in Afula received the “President’s Award for Volunteerism” in a special and moving ceremony held at the President’s Residence last week in Jerusalem.

The AMIT National Education Award for Outstanding High Schools was awarded this year to AMIT Kennedy Jr. and Sr. High School in Acco and its principal, Eti Zabary.

Tomer Segev, a student at the AMIT Gwen Straus Science and Technology High School in Kfar Batya, Ra’anana, won second place in the national start-up championship this week.

In preparation for summer vacation, the principal of AMIT Kfar Ganim Yeshiva in Petach Tikva, Rabbi Hagai Gross, gave his students a challenge entitled “Connect to the yeshiva wherever you are, even during vacation”.

Daniel Silva, the No. 1 New York Times best-selling author, just released “House of Spies,” the next installment of his series featuring Gabriel Allon, the Israeli spy, assassin and art restorer. Silva appeared at an AMIT event and book-signing in New York ahead of its release, and then spoke with AMIT about the new thriller, current events, including ISIS attacks and how he’s able to figure out where they will strike next, his writing process and what he’ll be tackling in his next book, which can be summed up in one word: Russia.

The twelfth graders at AMIT Renanim Jr. and Sr. High School for girls in Raanana marked the end of their high school studies and the start of a new stage of life – army and national service – with a special “Leadership Day”.

On Thursday night, Israel experienced its worst civilian tragedy when 45 people were killed in Meron. Sunday was declared a National Day of Mourning for all of Israel to come together and commemorate the lost. It was a day of solidarity with the impacted families and a day of prayer for those who are still in the hospital.
