One of the outstanding runners in last week’s Jerusalem Marathon was Rabbi Uriel Fish, a homeroom teacher at the AMIT Eitan Junior and Senior High School for Boys, Maaleh Adumim.
Fish began participating in the Jerusalem Marathon events in 2007 when he ran the half-marathon. He persevered through his training and finished with a very respectable time. His success got him hooked, and Fish began investing in healthy eating, walking, running, and getting more fit. He went from one marathon to another and broke his own records. He participated in the Bible Marathon along with his sons, running from Rosh HaAyin to ancient Shiloh, through Ariel.
For the last several years Rav Uriel has been participating in the Jerusalem Marathon while wearing an AMIT Eitan t-shirt, proudly representing the school. This year, he added a sign to his t-shirt in memory of Avraham Lifshitz, z”l, his dear student who recently passed away. Fish felt very connected to Avraham and his family and had prepared him for his bar mitzvah.
“Abraham’s familiar line, ‘We got this!’ hung on the back of my shirt and gave me the strength to reach the finish line,” Fish shared excitedly. “It is very important to set a goal, to start and finish. If at my age it is possible for me to live a healthy and fit life, then so can others.”
Daniel Be’eri, AMIT Eitan principal said: “We are privileged to have Rav Uriel, who loves the students deeply and teaches them every day that there is nothing that can stand in the way of the desire to achieve one’s goals. Running in the marathon in memory of Avraham Lifshitz was very exciting for his family and the entire school, and conveyed Avraham’s message—’We got this’!”
