AMIT Wasserman Beer Sheva and the Orim School of Special Education won the Israel Teachers’ Union Education Award for their collaboration and contribution to the community. This award recognizes outstanding educational initiatives, community service and volunteerism, and was presented to the two schools for their many years of collaboration. AMIT Principal Elisha Peleg and Orim School Principal Dorit Martine were awarded first place in the partnerships category by Ran Erez, chairman of the Secondary School Teachers’ Union, at a recent ceremony.
The connection between the two schools started with one teacher and one student a number of years ago. Dr. Gadi Deitchman, the vice principal at AMIT Wasserman who is responsible for the science track at the school, welcomed an Orim School student with autisim into his high-level, 5-unit mathematics class. Since then, the schools have collaborated on many levels. The students at both schools share joint activities throughout the year; student from Orim attend computer, history and physical education classes at AMIT Wasserman; and AMIT students act as mentors for the Orim students in class and during recess.
“Social involvement is the cornerstone of education at our school,” said Elisha Peleg. “We believe that an excellent academic Bagrut certificate should come along with a social action matriculation certificate that attests to giving to others, volunteering and contributing to the community.”
