After a hair-raising final round, the robotics team from the AMIT Mr. & Mrs. Lester Sutker Art and Sciences Jr. and Sr. High School for Boys in Modi’in won the national FIRST Robotics Competition by beating out the other teams from across Israel.

The team named Trigon was supposed to represent Israel at the international competition in Detroit, Michigan, this month, but decided to forgo the trip because the contest falls on Shabbat and the seventh day of Passover.

“We really wanted to go to the international competition,” said one student, Kfir L. “But we’re looking ahead to next year and we know that we will be able to advance and take part in international competitions in the future. We hope that no student will have to give up a championship because of his faith.”

Lior Halevi, the principal of AMIT Mr. & Mrs. Lester Sutker Art and Sciences Jr. and Sr. High School for Boys, said everyone is proud of the team’s impressive win, but are even more impressed by the maturity they exhibited. “We are confident these strengths will serve them in the future, both individually and as a team,” he said.
