Biology students at Ulpanat AMIT Kedumim Jr. and Sr. High School are getting invaluable lessons from leading scientists through a special program that coordinates virtual visits between the girls and the experts.
The students prepare for the “meetings” by studying the scientists’ subject of expertise and preparing questions to ask and topics for discussion. Then they head to a scientific center near their school in Kedumim, where using a computer, an oversize screen, and projector, they hold their virtual meeting.
Students in the 12th grade recently held a lively discussion with Noy Barak, a neuroscientist and multidisciplinary entrepreneur, and learned about the study of brain waves from her. Barak described her journey to becoming a scientist to them and also discussed the recent research she has conducted. She then answered the girls’ many questions about innovative new developments in brain research, particularly as they relate to attention deficit disorders. Barak then encouraged the girls to keep pursuing their scientific goals.
“We encourage the girls to broaden their horizons in the various scientific fields,” said Rabbi Efraim Zik, the school’s principal. “Our goal is to push each student to fulfill her potential in the sciences, while emphasizing the importance of religiously observant women becoming integrated in the world of academic science.”
