Students from the film track at AMIT Ashkelon Bet Junior and Senior High School recently won first place in the screenplay category of a youth film festival.
The national screenplay competition featured 12 scripts by students from cinema and film production tracks across the country. Their works deal with the choices and conflicts that teenagers face in their daily lives.
Moshe L., Yaniv A., Nissim H., and Amos B., students at AMIT Ashkelon, took first place in the “best social script” category for their work that deals with a family (father, daughter in the army, and son in high school) mourning the loss of their mother. The protagonist is the boy, who must deal with the longing for his mother, conflict with his father, and emotional issues that present as behavioral problems at school. He finds refuge in music and songwriting, which help him make peace with his situation.
The storyline is based on one of the student’s personal life, and the judges were impressed that he was able to express himself through cinema.
The students are presently shooting their film, which they hope to enter into national student film competitions.
AMIT encourages its students to explore their creative selves in many disciplines, including the arts. This philosophy is part of the network’s mission to encourage students to grow and develop in a holistic, whole-person way.
“The students in our film track and these screenwriters demonstrate not just impressive cinematic abilities, but also maturity and sensitivity,” said Rav Rafi Maimon, AMIT Bet’s principal. “I’m sure they will succeed in their future cinematic endeavors.”
