Ahead of the Purim holiday, students at AMIT Bet Ashkelon Junior & Senior High School organized a special Mishloach Manot drive. Instead of handing out sweets and hamantaschen, however, they donated blood.
Dozens of 12th-grade students and members of the teaching staff took part in the blood drive, which took place on school grounds thanks to the mobile blood bank unit that arrived there.
The blood bank team was impressed by the strong turnout, and told the students that their blood donations would be saving lives of people who recently underwent surgery.
One student, named Aviva, said that she and her classmates were happy to put plans for their Purim party on hold and take part in the blood drive. “We were excited to give of ourselves for the greater good, and that is the real joy of the holiday,” she said.
The school’s principal, Yaniv Akiva, said that the school works hard to ensure that its students are productive citizens that contribute to society and thanked everyone who took part in this especially special charitable mission.
