To mark Israeli Space Week, Ulpanat AMIT Givat Shmuel students hosted astronaut and pilot Eric Boe, former NASA administrator Charles Bolden and hundreds of students from around the country who are taking part in a special satellite-building program.
Givat Shmuel students in the cyber track are among those taking part in the satellite program, in which they are building a microsatelellite that will be launched into space this year. The students met with Boe, who was the pilot of the Endeavour space shuttle mission STS-126 that launched in November 2008, as well as Discovery’s final mission, STS-133, in February 2011.
They also presented their satellite project to educators from around the world who attended the 15th annual Ramon Space Conference as part of Space Week.
AMIT schools remain on the cutting edge of teaching science and technology and expose its students to various opportunities to learn about professional possibilities on Earth and in space. Its hosting of famous NASA members fits into its paradigm of giving students a wide education.
Chanit Freshtand, Ulpanat AMIT Givat Shmuel’s principal, said that the program, “opens a window onto the front lines of science, technology and research for the young women, and also strengthens their sense of national responsibility as future members of Israel’s space program.”
