Dozens of students from AMIT Renanim Science and Technology Junior and Senior High School donated their hair for cancer patients as a tribute to an Israeli teenager who was killed by a bomb during the summer.
Young women performing their national service (sherut leumi) at the school organized the event in memory of their friend, 17-year-old Rina Shnerb, z”l. In August, Rina was hiking with her father and brother when a homemade bomb went off by a spring near Dolev, in the Mateh Binyamin region. She was killed. Her father and brother were wounded.
Rina’s friends, Hodaya Rosenfeld and Ofra Ben Shahar, told the AMIT students that Rina had donated her hair several times to Zichron Menachem, an organization that supports young people in Israel with cancer and their families. They accept hair donations, which are used to make wigs for pediatric cancer patients.
Inspired by Rina’s generosity, more than two dozen students and teachers from AMIT Renanim, in Ra’anana, donated their hair as a way to commemorate the teenager.
AMIT schools work to instill the values of compassion and kindness and engage its students in myriad opportunities to do chesed.
Anael, a 9th-grade student who participated in the event said, “I had very long hair and I decided that it was time to cut it. I heard about the hair donation and thought it would be a good opportunity to do something nice for others. I was excited to cut my hair and to know that it would bring joy to a child who lost her [hair to cancer treatment].”
The principal of AMIT Renanim, Ofra Pe’er, praised the students who took part in the chesed. “We are proud of the students who decided to commemorate Rina, z”l, who was full of kindness, with a chesed initiative. They proved that giving to others strengthens those who give.”
