Eli Samuelson and Alon Freundlich, eighth-grade students at AMIT Ginsburg Bar Ilan Gush Dan Junior and Senior High School for Boys, Ramat Gan, were winners of the Bebras Israel competition held last week. These AMIT students excelled in a competition in which there were hundreds of participants from all over the country.

The purpose of the Bebras competition is to promote algorithmic thinking among students of all ages and to get students all over the world excited about computing. The 2020 Bebras competition included participants from 57 countries that first held national competitions, with over 2.4 million students from the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, and many European countries. Eli and Alon were rated in the 95th percentile of participants, and they will compete to be selected as Israel’s representatives at the Computer Science Olympiad.

“I was privileged to participate in the Bebras competition with hundreds of teens [from] around the country. It was a fun, interesting and challenging experience, that required effort and outside-the-box thinking. I learned a lot from it!” says Alon. “Always dare, never give up on dreams,” added his friend Eli. “This is what I took away from the competition.”

Tomer Shofar, principal at AMIT Ginsburg Bar Ilan Gush Dan, said: “Congratulations to the staff for leading the competition and creating an atmosphere of competition while at the same time offering encouragement and mutual help. I am very happy for the winners who are receiving well-deserved recognition for their efforts. Both Eli and Alon have a wonderful combination of excellence and humanity. We are blessed that these are our students.”
