Benson was the first in Israel to introduce this ceremony for young women, and it has since become an inseparable part of the school’s annual opening—a powerful connection to the values of repentance, strength, and renewal that mark the month of Elul.
Later in the week, the students traveled to Jerusalem for an uplifting “Night of Awakening.” The evening included a powerful Selichot (penitential prayers) tour along with experiential activities throughout the night. The girls experienced Jerusalem in a new light, drew strength from the prayers and the spirit of Elul, and returned deeply inspired to begin the year.
Students described the impact in their own words. Yahli Cohen (grade 8) shared: “It was bonding and fun. I got to know Jerusalem from new angles, and saying Selichot together with the whole school, along with the activities, prepared us for the Days of Awe.”
Shay-Lee (grade 8) added: “We saw the beauty of Jerusalem, walked a lot, and had so much fun. Praying in such a different atmosphere made the whole experience unique.”
