Students from AMIT Technological High School in Ashdod volunteered this week during the COVID-19 lockdown to help isolated seniors and small business owners most affected by the economic slowdown.
With their own funds, the students bought flowers from a local farmer school whose merchandise was about rot and put together care packages that included food, cards, and the flowers to deliver to local senior housing units. They left the care packages outside the seniors’ residences doorways in compliance with social distancing restrictions.
Ortel David, a 12th-grade student at AMIT Ashdod said, “I think that it’s very important to help those in need and those who don’t have. I could have gone to my day job because I work at a place that is considered essential services, but I preferred to come and help with love.”
Another student, Nohorai Gamlial, an 11th grader, added, “It was really fun to stretch my limbs and do something good. It gave me a good feeling in these days and I finally had the permission to venture beyond my house and that wasn’t bad either.”
AMIT Technological High School Principal Sima Peretz said, “We were happy to volunteer together – teachers and students – to help those in need during this complex time. I think the main lesson that we all learned was that true social connection is formed by the bond of helping one’s neighbor and thinking and helping others.”
