Students from the AMIT Karmiel Junior and Senior High School came in fourth place and were awarded a certificate of excellence at the Ilan Ramon science olympics, a national competition in which more than 200 schools and 4,000 students participated.

Over the past year, the students took part in five stages of competition that included online quizzes, problem-solving, teamwork, experiments, activities in their communities, and building models related to the solar system.

Ten schools advanced to the final round of competition, including AMIT Karmiel’s team of 8th-grade students. In the finals, the students went head to head, answering questions about space research and the chemical composition of elements in the solar system, and presenting the models they constructed.

The competition took place at the Israel Center for Excellence Through Education in Jerusalem, which organized the event with the Israel Space Agency, the Education Ministry, and the Ramon Foundation.

Named for Ilan Ramon, z”l, Israel’s first astronaut and his son Asaf, z”l, both of whom died tragically in separate incidents, the foundation aims to encourage Israeli youth to pursue space and aviation studies and aspire to educational excellence.

“We are happy to take part in this unique opportunity,” said AMIT Karmiel Principal Guy Dekel. “Participating in the olympics provided the students with a scientific, academic, and professional learning experience at the forefront of science and space development.
