The physics community at the AMIT network is constantly looking for new ways to get the teachers and students excited about the subject, and this past week that translated into two unique and eye-opening excursions.
The community of physics teachers in the network, led by Dr. Rachela Turgeman, toured the intelligence division of Elbit Systems, the high-tech defense and security firm. They heard from Harel Kraus, who heads the company’s control and navigation branch, as well as from Boaz Weizer, Elbit’s VP for R&D and engineering. He gave the teachers an overview of Elbit’s different divisions and showed them some of the latest innovations in aeronautics, lasers, and defense systems.
Dr. Turgeman said the purpose of the trip was to provide teachers with additional tools to show students how the knowledge of physics is important and relevant outside of the classroom.
That notion is something that students from the AMIT Mr. & Mrs. Lester Sutker Art and Sciences Jr. and Sr. High School for Boys learned firsthand this week as well.
The 10th- and 11th-grade physics-track students visited an Israel Air Force squadron to hear from pilots about how the laws of physics impact their jets’ engines and maneuvering. The boys got to see different types of planes and learn about the experiments carried out at the air force base.
Lior Halevi, principal of the AMIT Modi’in boys’ school, praised physics coordinator Michal Erlich, who organized the field trip, adding that these unique and unexpected learning experiences stimulate the students’ curiosity and help them fulfill their potential.
