Aviad G., a student at AMIT Gwen Straus Jr. and Sr. Science High School for Boys, in Ra’anana, won the national competition for young scientists and developers and will be representing Israel at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Arizona.
Aviad and his partner, Daniel M. (who attends the Tamar Ariel High School in Netanya), competed against hundreds of young budding Israeli scientists, including several other AMIT students. Their research project deals with the development of a hybrid electrochemical component that combines a battery and capacitor. They were supervised by a Bar Ilan University professor and an employee at Intel.
Aviad and Daniel impressed the panel of judges comprising academic researchers and senior engineers at Intel, winning them first place at the national competition.
It also earned them a ticket to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, which takes place in May.
The young Israeli scientists competition, organized by the Education Ministry and the Goren-Monti-Ferrari Family Foundation, is now in its 22nd year. It caters to high school students in grades 10-12 from all over the country who study science at the 5-point bagrut level and are in the process of writing research papers or projects in physics, chemistry, math, life sciences and the environment, technology and engineering, or computer science.
