Students from AMIT Yud Ashdod Jr. and Sr. High School swept the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) regional robotics contest on January 18, coming in first place in research and advancing to the next round of competition.
The win at the tournament in Tel Aviv guarantees the AMIT team’s participation in the national finals, as well as their participation in the FIRST LEGO League Global Innovation Award international quarterfinals. There they will be competing among some 80 other teams from around the world.
This is the second year in a row that the AMIT Yud Ashdod robotics team made a strong showing at the competition. Last year, they won the national innovation award at the FLL robotics competition, beating 12 teams from across the country in the finals and going on to represent Israel at the FIRST international robotics competition.
Last year’s theme was animal assistance. Each team had to demonstrate the ability to program a robot to perform certain tasks, and to write a research paper on the subject. The AMIT Yud Ashdod students chose to explore the preservation of sea turtles, and created an innovative sensor to be installed on turtles’ backs to help prevent them from getting entangled fishing nets.
The FIRST LEGO League Global Innovation Award competition is designed to showcase the real-world, innovative solutions that FIRST LEGO League teams create.
FIRST LEGO League trains kids to think like innovators, and encourages and assists teams to develop solutions to real-world problems that demonstrate originality and have the potential to add significant value to the world.
The Eighth Annual FIRST LEGO League Global Innovation Award will be held June 19-21, 2018, in San Jose, California at the San Jose State University Student Union.
