Students from AMIT Wasserman Jr. and Sr. High School for Girls in Maaleh Adumim are among the winners of the “My Jerusalem” poetry competition, sponsored by the Ministry of Education’s English department in the Jerusalem District, to mark the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the city of Jerusalem. Hundreds of students in Grades 5-9 from the Jerusalem district competed by composing original poems about Jerusalem in English.
Under the guidance of the school’s English coordinator Judy Ravitz, three poems were submitted by AMIT Wasserman students and two of them were included among the 30 winning poems.
AMIT student Tohar Yaakovi won with a poem entitled “The Mashiach (Messiah),” and students Achinoam Har Noy and Liron Shurka won with their rap “Beautiful Jerusalem”.
The winning poems are currently displayed around the streets of Jerusalem – in Emek Refaim, in the German Colony, and on Ben Yehuda Street in the city center.
Brenda Horwitz-Parver, principal of AMIT Wasserman commented, “The students proved that love for the city of Jerusalem has no language limitations. They managed to convey the special beauty of Jerusalem even in English – with a lot of creativity and talent. “
