Hallel Barelli, a 17 year old resident of Sderot and student at Ulpanat AMIT Shirat Sderot, was chosen to light a torch on Israeli Independence Day. Hallel was chosen for this prestigious honor for her leadership and social activism. She is a youth movement leader, a member of the municipal youth council and a peer leader of educational field trips. Hallel also volunteers regularly in Sderot. During the Operation Protective Edge – and under constant fire and peril – Hallel organized and ran the volunteer efforts of all the city’s youth movements, religious and secular alike, in order to serve all the city’s neighborhoods, children and senior citizens. “I represent the amazing young people of Sderot, who give of themselves generously,” said Hallel. “I thank G-d for all the good in the world and for the privilege to be born into Am Yisrael.”
This is the second consecutive year an AMIT student will be lighting a torch. Hallel is following in the footsteps of Or Assouline of AMIT Acco who lit a torch last year. “The AMIT Network is proud to of its contribution to young female leadership,” said Dr. Amnon Eldar, Director General of the AMIT Network. “Hallel and Or are joined by Eliav Tito, an AMIT Afula student and chair of Israel’s National Student Council, in proving that the country’s future leadership will not only come from the center of the country.”
