As part of the Israel Space Agency project for a select group of teens, Yeshivat AMIT Amichai students met with French astronaut Jean-Jacques Favier, who was a member of the U.S. space shuttle Columbia space expedition in 1996. Favier shared his personal story as a professional astronaut with students. He emphasized that it was very difficult to become an astronaut and that his persistence and strong desire to get to space are what ultimately helped him achieve his goal. Astronaut Favier also spoke with students about his experiences in space, the research being carried out at various space stations, and the unique physical phenomena that occurs only in space. The students were enthralled, expressed their keen interest and asked many questions about Favier’s training and experiences as an astronaut in space.
“This unique encounter inspired our students to start envisioning their role in space,” said Rabbi Shimon Shoshan, principal of AMIT Amichai. “We believe in our students’ ability to fulfill their dreams and become Israel’s astronauts of tomorrow.”
