In classic AMIT-style, Yeshivat AMIT Ashdod 9th grader Dannel M. turned the health “crisis into an opportunity,” corralling students and friends into a nationwide chesed effort to help quarantined seniors and others. Dannel launched the local Ashdod volunteer squad that grew to a more than 200-strong group throughout Israel. Fielding calls from the different welfare ministries, volunteers brought food, medical supplies, and other necessities to those in need.

“The world is like a puzzle,” Dannel said. “Everyone brings their own part and together they create the beautiful whole for the community, especially in times of such crisis. I’m glad my initiative inspired and attracted many more volunteers across the country.”

Rabbi Shalom Malul, Yeshivat AMIT Ashdod principal said, “In days like these, where we are reminded about social distancing, Dannel exemplifies what is true proximity – the ability to think about others before yourself.”

Not surprisingly, AMIT students spearheaded other chesed efforts. Earlier, two students from AMIT Nachson ran the food bank of Beit Shemesh to feed the community’s needy.

In keeping with the AMIT value of Klal Yisrael, AMIT network has a series of programs to help students connect, including showcasing morale-boosting student-made videos offering support. These videos are being shared on AMIT’s social media platforms.

For parents and educators, AMIT network launched a nightly Zoom lecture featuring prominent Jewish professionals, such as Rabbi Yuval Cherlow and journalist Sivan Rahav Meir, who speak on aspects relevant to the health crisis.
