Update From Israel #33

Today is October 7, marking one year since the horrific attack on Israel. The day is filled with sadness and mourning for the lives lost and atrocities suffered by so many individuals and communities.

At the same time, this day is also filled with hope, pride, and a strong sense of both mission and purpose while we pray for the return of the 101 hostages who are still in Azza, for the soldiers who are fighting for our safety and security on all fronts, and for unity among the Jewish people.

At AMIT, we focus on proudly waving the flag, unity, shared values, and shared destiny.

Several network-wide initiatives will mark both today and tomorrow, and individual programming is also taking place in each of our schools.

  1. AMIT is sending a bus “Bus Line 710,” (a play on the date of October 7, written as dates are indicated in Israel and Europe) with Sderot students across the country, to visit our AMIT schools and share their personal stories with peers from difficult communities. Our goal for this program is to create one shared narrative within the Reshet. Everyone experienced different challenges and hardships beginning October 7, and building a shared national story is part of what will help us heal our fractured society.
  2. A series of seven podcasts, interviewing students, teachers, parents, principals, and those who lost their loved ones launched today. These personal accounts share their stories, talk about loss, lessons learned, contributions to Israeli society, and more, giving the AMIT community a unique and varied perspective while also raising awareness about the diverse realities everyone now lives in.
  3. Poetry Slam – Students were selected from across the AMIT network (center, periphery, religious, and secular), and given the opportunity to speak about October 7 from their perspective.
  4. Network-wide event at Hostage Square – In a show of solidarity and support for the hostages and their families, AMIT representatives will visit Hostage Square tomorrow, where we and the families will participate in group discussions, and then among ourselves with students from a wide variety of schools. It is important for us as an educational network to show our students that their support and presence at a time like this has nothing to do with politics and remains extremely important. AMIT’s senior administrative team is taking part in this event and will conduct their full, regular day of meetings in Tel Aviv.

We hope this programming will take place as planned, since there were rockets in central Israel today and the security situation remains unclear.
