Update From Israel #32

As of Saturday night, 9:00PM, when we found out that our northern schools in Tzfat, Chatzor, Haifa, and Acco would be closed (six schools in total), the AMIT team quickly mobilized to put together an AMITTV program.

We brought our students an exciting lineup of live online content with a variety of personalities, both educational and entertaining.

The program featured writer Yaniv Zohar, creator of the hit Israeli mockumentary-style sitcom “Cash Register.” The show takes place in the fictional Israeli supermarket, Shefa Isaschar, and humorously explores the day-to-day interactions between the store’s quirky employees and customers.

Meeting Yaniv is a unique opportunity for our students to gain insight into the creative process behind one of Israel’s most popular TV shows. Students were then privileged to hear from Karin Kleinberg, popular mommy vlogger from Sderot and recent contestant on Israel’s hit show “The Race for a Million.” There was then a stand-up comedian, followed by an inspirational talk by Rabbi Moshe Malka.

We are committed to connecting with our students and ensuring their ongoing learning and resilience-building, even and especially during such challenging times. AMITTV’s programming will continue for as long as our students cannot physically attend school as mandated by the Ministry of Education and the IDF Home Command.

Last week AMIT hosted a very moving and uplifting day, with the very first “Boi Ha’Ruach” (May the Spirit Arise) conference in Ma’aleh Adumim. The idea of the conference was the brainchild of a graduate of AMIT Eitan Ma’aleh Adumim who wished to commemorate his homeroom teacher Rabbi Elon Weiss, and his classmate Yakir Teitelbaum, both of whom fell in Gaza.

President Herzog spoke about the role AMIT plays in Israeli society, the values we instill in our students, and the meaningful and significant roles and impact our graduates have on Israeli society at large. This is the case both in their lives, and unfortunately, in their deaths. Rav Elon and Yakir, teacher, and student, exemplify these very values, of commitment to our country and people, putting others first, and being willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for a much greater good than themselves.

Scholar Sivan Rahav Meir focused on images of victory, including a very moving photo of the head of the German Air Force who arrived in Israel immediately after October 7 and donated blood on behalf of the wounded, a mere 80 years after the Holocaust. To think that his predecessor’s role focused on shedding Jewish blood, and today he is using his blood to save Jews, is mind boggling. Sivan’s message was that despite the many challenges, our attitude with which we view reality can help us find the small victories during this exceedingly difficult time.

The day, which was full of both tears and laughter, left everyone with a feeling of “may we be worthy” – may our students, and all of us, lead lives of meaning, happiness, and fulfillment, following in the footsteps of Rav Elon and Yakir.
