Update From Israel #31

Today, there is no Jew in the world who did not shed a tear.

Rachel Goldberg-Polin’s words: “Finally, finally, you’re free,” keep ringing in our ears… These words resonate deeply within us, reminding us of our people’s incredible strength and resilience. This profound sense of solidarity and shared destiny is what drives us to take meaningful actions, particularly in times of great struggle.

In this spirit, AMIT Director General Amnon Eldar made the decision to work one day a week from Sderot. This commitment reflects our desire to not only support the city during its recovery, but to be a true partner in the processes AMIT leads. Our mission is clear: help Sderot rise above its challenges, become a place of social mobility and a hub for excellence.

Today, Amnon spent his first day of the school year in Sderot visiting our three high schools AMIT Makif Sderot, AMIT religious high school, and the AMIT Be’eri Girls Ulpana. Here are some of his thoughts and impressions from the day.

All of our schools have opened successfully, despite the ongoing teachers and labor strikes. I am proud to report that despite the crazy year Sderot has experienced, our schools have seen an increase of more than 150 students in our high schools. During the course of the day, I met with determined principals, teachers, and students, all committed to returning to a routine of learning; encountered educators and mentors who are passionately guiding their students with great care and dedication, and witnessed teachers filled with enthusiasm as they taught their various subjects.

The students I met are setting ambitious goals across different areas of their studies. The 12th graders, in particular, are already eagerly thinking about meaningful service in the IDF and national service.

I couldn’t help but think just how fortunate we are as a nation to face the most difficult challenges and emerge stronger, ready for renewal and growth. I left my home this morning with the intention of offering support – but left school feeling deeply inspired.

AMIT is truly fortunate and privileged to play such a significant and vital role in the resilience and growth of the city of Sderot and its residents.

We will share more updates and first-hand impressions from Amnon as the year continues.
